PCBs in Our Children's Schools
In early August, 2010, three New York City public schools were tested by the Department of Education under Environmental Protection Agency supervision for the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. The results? Two schools had air levels of pcbs exceeding the federal screening threshold. The other school had levels that were 2,000 times higher than the federal standard.

New York Communities for Change is not going to sit around and wait for more results a year from now. NYCC members are demanding that the Department of Education devises a plan to immediately test EVERY New York City public school built or renovated between 1950 and 1978 for high levels of PCBs. The City must also devise a comprehensive plan to clean up all schools that test positive for high levels of PCBs.
